                   Welcome and thank you for volunteering to be a Speech judge!

This training video has been divided into short segments for easy viewing. We recommend that segments be viewed in order initially. Subsequent viewings are easily accessed by topic from the listing/links below.
SPECIAL NOTE: Since these segments were filmed, the MMSSL made the environmentally conscious decision to move to online balloting. This continues to save 1500+ pieces of paper every tournament as well as increasing the speed of tabulating the results. Therefore, each segment listed will show adaptive notations below its link, if applicable, that provide information to modify the segment content when it covers material specific to paper ballots.

B. Commonalities for Judging All 11 MMSSL Events:                                                               Arrival at a Tournament Site, Paper "Dance Cards" and Paper Ballot Preparation
    Segment B     6:19
    Adaptive Notes Segment for B:  Ballots and "dance cards" are no longer on paper. Both now appear through                     the online "Campus" Platform when judges log into their Tabroom account, go to their assigned round and click "start                   round." The content described for filling out paper ballots is also useful for filling out online ballots.

     Adaptive Notes Segment for C:  Please note that whenever the term "dance card" is used it means the list/ballots of         student speakers for each round sent to a judge's device through Tabroom.

     Starting/Comments/Time/Rank/Quality Pts.
     Segment D    13:05
     Adaptive Notes for Segment D:  Ballots are filled out on a Judge's personal WiFi device. Judges should listen for the         first minute then should fill out comments while the student speaks. Ballots are no longer “turned in” – they are                             submitted from the online platform. Ranks and quality points should be submitted promptly although comments may be               accessed and modified up until approx. 8 PM tournament day.

     Timing and Time Signals
     Segment E    7:39 
      Adaptive Notes for Segment E:  It is recommended that you use a separate timing device rather than use the timer           on the tabroom platform because the Tabroom timer counts down. It is more helpful to have a timer that counts up so that           overtime speakers will be accurately timed. If a judge needs to use the timer on the Tabroom site, it is recommended that           they up the start time to 8 minutes, not 7, so that it can be determined if a student speaker goes over the grace period of 7         minutes, 30 seconds.

F. Special Timing for the Impromptu Speaking Event & Timing

      Adaptive Notes for Segment F: If you choose/need to use the timer on the Tabroom website, please set it for 8                   minutes, not 7, since it counts down. This will allow for the grace period and monitoring for overtime speakers. 

G. Modifying the Speaker Order for Double Entry
     Segment G    2:46  
      Adaptive Notes for Segment G:  The modification and double entry procedure is the same as shown in the video               except that modifying the speaker order presented online must be done by the judge outside the device. The judge should         note the new adjusted order on a separate paper or document and then refer to this new order when calling each speaker.         Please be careful to then select the correct, matching ballot for each speaker in the new order.
